July and early August are crazy times for church communities due to all of the travel and events that are taking place. Recognizing that a number of people in our community will be out over the next few weeks we have decided to put together a 40 day scripture reading, devotional & prayer focus – THE ELEMENT.

You can find these guided readings at the-element.org. Our hope is that even though we may be a part of the next 40 days that we can all focus on the elemental or basic precepts of Jesus and his story. We’ll be reading together, thinking together and praying together about the same things no matter where we are geographically. This focus will help our hearts and minds stay together despite the distance and we can continue to grow as a community here in Spring Hill.

In Luke chapter 2, the writer seems to go out of his way to paint Jesus and his family as faithful/practicing Jews in the first century. Mary & Joseph observe the rituals of having a first born son, they are said to keep the requirements, they go back & forth to Jerusalem for the Passover festival.

On this last occasion, Jesus gets separated from his family as they leave Jerusalem to return to Nazareth. This would not be all that hard as whole groups of families and friends would travel up to Jerusalem & then home again. When they find Jesus, 3 days later…can you imagine the panic, he is in the Temple courts with the religious leaders talking Torah with them. The scriptures say that they are amazed by his questions and answers. This is a very Hebraic way of saying that they are impressed with his handling of & thinking about the scriptures.

For today’s insight, I want you to look at a couple of links. We’ll talk about this more in depth at Utopia tomorrow night @ 8 and Wednesday night.

“The shepherd goes before, to see that the way is practicable and safe. He is armed in order to defend his charge, and in that he is very courageous. Many adventures with wild beasts occur not unlike that recounted by David; and though there are no lion here, wolves, leopards, and panthers still prowl about these wild wadys. They not infrequently attack the flock in the very presence of the shepherd. I have listened with interest to their descriptions of desperate fights with those savage beasts. And when the thief and the robber come, and come they do, the faithful shepherd has often to defend his flock at the hazard of his life” –William M.
